SOME CULTURAL WEBSITES ABOUT

Stop and think about this view!!!!!

The diversity of lakes and rivers are incredible!!!!

LENÇOIS

This is the BEST weekend trip I did over 8 weeks.

The bus journey is horrible, but worth every minute!

When you arrive in Lençois at about 6 am, you will be rounded immediately by tour guides. We went with CIRTUR and although our guide couldn´t speak English, we manage to communicate and he was great fun and he locked after we really well.
The leaflet shows the many wonderful places there are to see. The hiking can be challenging, but that´s what makes it so worthwhile.
Lençois itself is beautiful and peaceful. Take band aid, sun cream, water(although the mountain spring water is safe to drink), swimming costume and your camera. The scenery is shinning!
Enjoy the experience – it´s different to all the others weekend trips and highly recommended.

· Lençois is a fantastic trip – definitely one not to miss! It’s a LONG WAY – but it is so worth it
The bus there takes about 6/7 hours. Wrap up warm because it is freezing! The journey back is worse – the roads are very bumps!
When you arrive it will be 5:30 am. You will be tired and grumpy but will be bombarded by tour guides. We just picked the most persistant one! He was from zen tours and turned out to be very good!
We checked into a Pousada – can´t remember the name – get to the main square an turn right. Its at the end of the road on the right. I think it was called Bom fortune or something it meant “Good luck”. It had a pool, but is perfect for those on a budget.

The tour guides will advise you what to do.

On Saturday we did 2 separate treks. Really excellent stuff to see.

On Sunday we did an all day excursion where a bus drives you to several locations, you get out at each stop and then walk around.
Don´t forget your camera – the scenes are fantastic!

Lençois:

- Do it. It is breathtaking and beautiful.
- Zen tours is good and gives competitive prices.
- You may be able to find the same types of tours from your Pousada at a better price or just in smaller groups. We did it this way and it was great!
- Don’t take too much stuff – you can wear the same thing hiking every day.
- Don´t forget your swim suit. There are some awesome places to go swimming – all natural and clear.
- About an hour away from town(walking) there is this lake with rocks and boulders surrounding it. Don’t let the walk put you off, it is worth the pain. This place is amazing.
- The cave is cool
- The mountain is rewarding if you climb it
- Don’t be apprehensive, just go for it
FOOD : Restaurant delicious is a very cheap.
Italian restaurants are also cool.

POUSADA: Pousada Rita

GETTING THERE: - Book a few days before as the bus gets full..
- Go to the mall at the money change place and buy tickets there. There is a nightbus(11:30pm) or a day one(7:00am). The bus is freezing so layer up.
-

If you only have one weekend and like the nature, do this.
Oh and book the ticket home quite soon after you arrive.

- LENÇOIS AND CHAPADA DIAMANTINA

A place of diverse natural beauty – but you either hike 2-4 hs trip to visit nearby waterfalls and swimming holes, or sign up with one of 6 or 7 tour agencies to do day-long Excursions(passeos) to remote areas. However, in tourist season some trips fill up fast – when it rains heavily, as it does in Dec. and Jan., trips are cancelled
I still enjoyed the town and nearly walks but missed a chance to go to Marimbos – 2 hs boat trip and visit to a waterfall which gives a “highs massage”.
Spending a little more $ can mean a lot Vis a Vis Pousadas. Pousada dos Duendes is cheap – room with Varanda and hammock – but too Spartan.
Casa da Gelia and Pousada Kaiamba which are both very nice. For a big splurge.
Tour of Andaira is interesting, treks nearby nice and cheap Pousada and rest - PEDEN- but transport for there to Lençois can be difficult – we waited 4hrs! for a bus which had no schedule except it will come between 2 and 6 = come at 6! Same would be time from MUCUGE If you have the $, better to stay in LENÇOIS and make bag trips to the MUCUGE/ANDAIRA area.

LEN TOURS and MARIMBUS TOURS are good you might even call ahead to arrange, i.e. sign up for a tour.

CAMPING at a beautiful park – like place which is sort of a Pousada(nice and rooms) restaurants complex “CAMPING LUMIAR”

BACKPACKING AT CHAPADA DIAMANTINA:

If you enjoy backpacking there´s an awesome three-day trip you should definitely do! Kristin and I left Thursday night from the Bus Station planning on going to Lençois, but there were no tickets left so we went to a town that was close and caught a bus to Lençois from there. The Zen tour guide picked us up at 5am and we started backpacking by ten. It’s about twenty-three miles over hills and through valleys. We even went to the 2nd largest waterfall in the world – on the 3rd day we hiked up it!The food was sensational and at night we slept in caves.

LENÇOIS

There are so many amazing natural sites to see in Lençois and the surrounding areas. The small town resembles a tiny version of Pelorinho with many small shops and cafés and lots of music in the evenings with most of the population being tourists from various countries, cheap pousadas are everywhere and there are many opportunities to get great deals on tours of the natural exibits. There are beautiful waterfalls, be serve to bring your camera also many beautiful caves, Poço Azul is particularly very gorgeous. There is a smaller cave about 2 hours from Lençois where you can swim in the clean waters. Very Beautiful! Try not to let the tourism aspect discourage you, the beauty and the atmosphere are totally worth the trip. Be sure to bring goos shoes for climbing rocks..

LENÇOIS

This place was absolutely beautiful. If you’re the kind of person who likes nature, this is the place for you. There are many different treks, car tours, canoeing, horseback riding, etc. The bus ride is 6 hrs long and it is a little cold so it´s good idea to bring a small blanket or an extra coat.

Things you might want to bring:
Ø Sunscreen
Ø Backpack
Ø Normal walking shoes(for trekking)
Ø Water
Ø Swimsuit

The buses are very easy t travel on. When you first get to Lençois, there will be agents waiting who usually speak English. They will take you to a pousada that is cheap and confortable. They can also get you set up with 2 days, 3 days, 5 days and 15 days treks.

In the town of Lençois, there are ATMs, grocery stores, internet cafes and many restaurants, pousadas and shopping places. If you are planning the trip over a holiday, it is best to reserve a room before you leave. Also when buying your bus tickets you should go to Shopping Barra and on the 1st floor, by the food court, there is a travel agent who will sell you tickets. It´s a good idea to get round trip tickets. The bus leaves at 7am and 7:30pm

Cost:
Bus Tickets – R$ 35(1 way)
Pousada – R$ 20 – 100 (per night)
Day treks – R$ 25 – 35 (per person)
Car Tours – R$ 50 – 60 (per person)
Restaurants – R$ 10 – 50 (per person, per meal)

There are some very good restaurants in Lençois including Cozinha Aberta. Don’t be fooled by the sign that says ‘Slow food’ because that’s what makes it amazing.

Night Life:

There are a coupke bars in Lençois and one dance club. Usually things don’t start happening until around 11 – 11:30pm.

HAVE FUN!

ENJOY!

LINHA VERDE

BEACH TRIP FARTHER AWAY

To see a more Brazilian beach scene in a small town , go north of Praia do forte follow the Coconut Route – can take the same buses on Linha Verde – North. The furthest on this route is CONDE (inland) and SITIO DO CONDE (about 3 ½). I continued even further by taxi via a road made of sand to the ting town of SIRIBINHA.
In PRAIA/SITIO DO CONDE, there are a number of hostels and restaurants. This one POUSADA TROPICAL looked best.
One sort of beach has a small board walk and blaring music but by walking in either direction you can find quiet stretches.
SIRIBINHA is for those who wants to do nothing but relax – swim, fishing is very big, read, sleep etc. There are small bars which, along with several restaurants, seemed to close early. This isn´t a place for nightlife but you will meet Brazilians(most seemed middle age) on vacation lots of local children and be fort of Village life – a big chance.
The Pousadas are very basic – small room with double bed, a fan, a ting bathroom, unless you get a “CASA” instead of a “QUARTO”, which is better for 2 or more people. Liked the owners and food at Pousada SOL DE VERÃO.

Overview from the lighthouse!!!!

The beaches are so cool!!! Enjoy it.

This fort is incredible!!!!

MORRO DE SÃO PAULO

Great weekend trip! If you like beaches, this is the place for you. The island is a 2 hour boat ride from Salvador. There are 4 beaches each with their own character. You have to like walking because there are NO cars on the island the closest you’ll get to transportation around the island are 1) the boys with the wheel barrows who offer to take your bags and 2) the horse rides on the beach. It’s a relaxing weekend for beaches, walks, food and beer. On the 2nd beach there’s an all-night “festa” disco, crazy drinks etc.

Getting There:

We took the catamaran from Mercado Modelo. Don’t take the “launchs” unless you have to, it’s a rough ride and takes longer.

Staying there:

Lots of bed and breakfast and other hostels. When you get there people will guide to the “Pousadas”.

TIPS:

- Buy groceries from shops to make lunch if you want to save money;
- On the 3rd Beach, Pousada Paradise is a great place to stay;
- The Crepe restaurant called “Oh La La” is very good, open for lunch and dinner;
- Italian food restaurant has excellent pizza and a little bar to sit facing the main street;
- At the top of the hill by dock, past the cemetery, is a sort of club with dancing and DJ´s at night. Lots of fun!

MORRO DE SÃO PAULO

Absolutely beautiful. The Island is very nice – not to far and quiet. I went horseback riding on beach and up to water fall. It was so fun and how often can you ride a horse, let alone on paradise.
I also took boat tour around the island and stopped at one other island. This was great. Once again being on water is fun and we got to see whole island – we saw dolphins – it was so cool, went to island inhabited by only 3 families – the most peaceful, surreal place you will probably ever go.
Take time to do everything you want, so you do not regret it in the end.
Enjoy your stay! It goes fast.

MORRO DE SÃO PAULO

Do Zipline!!! Walk up to lighthouse

Beautiful Island that is perfect for either a 2 or 3 days weeked, there are so many things to do. The pousadas are cheap (depend the season), but the rest of the island is expensive, you can snorkel, horse ride, zipline, bike, see a waterfall, boat hide around the island, lay on beaches that have no-one or very few people on the island itself is picture and tourism.

Ps: try the hot cheese on the beach and the hamburgers they are gorgeous.

Pousada da Torre- nice pousada
Restaurants- Oh, La, La crepes good for dessert in main “tour” walk; Italian place with checkered cloth good pizza!!!; Sabor da Terra good shrimp moqueca!

CASA BLANCA POUSADA - Beautiful Pousada on Morro de São Paulo. Situated in the Vila. 5 min walk to the 2nd beach. All rooms have bathroom, fridge, TV, A/C and lovely décor. BAR 87 – Good food and drink.

The island is beautiful and has to be visited. I only stayed at 1 night but should stayed longer.

Watch the sunset from the light house and you might have the chance to see dolphins

MORRO DE SÃO PAULO

If you don't mind spending the extra cash, I strongly suggest staying at the Pousada Amendoeira Praia Hotel.
The staff is extremely friendly, it's safe, very very clean, and the breakfast is very good … and free!!
All rooms, have television, A/C, refrigerators(mini-bar), hammocks, and normal beds. Ask for a balcony(ocean view) room ... it is definetely an experience. It is so peaceful and refreshing to wake up in the morning and overlook the Atlantic. The hotel is located on beach 3, which is right next to the beach 2(The party beach)! Treat yourself. You really deserve it !!! Who knows when you' ll ever come back ?!?
Much Love,

BAHIA

1 – PRAIA DO FORTE

A trip to Praia do Forte is a day trip that is worthwhile. It is located at 60 km north of Salvador, a 1 ½(easy) trip by car. Along the way there are lovely white sand beach and palm trees beaches.
It also contains a Turtle Project and there you can see turtle nesting and birthday center (the female lay their eggs in November and December; the hatch ling strive to make it to the sea in January and February at night, after dark. Only at 1% make it).

Beautiful and restful if you want quiet, you can have it by booking a hostel on a side street and asking for a side (garden) room. If you want good restaurants and night life (live music by 10pm on sat) it’s on the main walkways.
Many vendors bargain at the main square (near light house entrance to turtle Project which is very interesting, allow at least 1 h and visit the gift store. If you stay several days, there are horse back rides; dune buggy rides, etc but has to book these with an agency. Great ice cream at a self service place. For good Brazilian food - OGUM - It is also a beautiful Inn (pousada). I stayed at the Pousada dos Artistas which I loved. Nice room, huge buffet breakfast. The rooms had ceiling fans or air conditioning and probably slightly more for air conditioning. Owners speak excellent English.

Pousada dos Artistas - Phone – (0 xx 71) 3676-1147
Pousada Ogum Marinho – Phone – (0 xx 71) 3676-1062

Highlights – after great beach morning (the farther you walk, the fewer people there are) I showed and lay in my hammock. I kept hearing a Bird but couldn’t locate it. Finally I looked down and saw in the flowering Vines on the balcony railing a ting white face, belonging to a ting gray monkey!

How to get there:

Take a bus to RODOVIÁRIA (bus station)
Get a ticket to PRAIA DO FORTE 1 ½ bus ride
Very cute and cool village *Must See*
To get home take one of the vans near the bus stop (not a comfortable ride home but very interesting and a good experience) or take the bus in the same place that drop you off.

This is definitely a worthwhile trip, and it is an easy day trip or could certainly be turned into an overnight.
Take a taxi to the bus station RODOVIÁRIA in Salvador. The ticket windows are upstairs. I took a Linha Verde bus on the way there (every hour). The trip could take anywhere from 1 ½ hrs to 3 hrs depending on traffic, but you pass some pretty areas along the way and it’s a pleasant ride. It’s pretty and feels quite safe and wasn’t crowded on a Saturday in October.
The beach is beautiful and no one bothered me at all.
The Tamar Project with the sea turtles is really interesting, very quick and right on the beach. Sit and watch the film about the project while you’re there! I didn’t stay over so I didn’t know about hostels. On the way home just return to the area where the bus drop you off. No need to buy a ticket ahead of time, just get on the bus.

I thought it might be a lame weekend trip to go to Praia do Forte because I don’t think that turtles are that thrilling, but it was great. Perfect relaxing getaway with beautiful beaches and friendly people.
I stayed at Pousada Porto da Lua – Fabulous! (more expensive than most).
It sits right on the beach and I woke up to see the sunrise on the ocean. The beach there is not too crowded because the Pousada is in an area where mostly locals live. It is to the left of the main street if you’re looking at the ocean.
If being right on the beach is not a necessity, there are cheaper Pousadas/Hostels to the right of the main street.
*Be sure you go when it’s sunny! I didn’t do any eco-tours- just the beaches were satisfying for me.

Small village that has a turtle zoo. It is a laid back fishing village, we stayed at an incredible pousada called Refúgio da Villa. (small pool) The owners spoke English. There were hammocks on each rooms porch. It is a 2 second walk to the main strip. Lots of little stands selling jewelry, trinkets and dresses.
Option to go on adventures i.e.: zip lining canoying, white water rafting. Relatively cheap weekend getaway
